The Music I Play...
I grew up in south Sligo and learned my first music there, initially on the tin whistle, and then on the fiddle. I learned a lot of tunes at that time from Jim McGettrick, a tin whistle player, who was a neighbour and also my grand-uncle. Ted McGowan's pub in Gurteen was the other main source of music for me back then, with musicians like James Murray, Jimmy Murphy and Peter Horan playing there regularly.
At some point I started singing, and then playing the guitar too, and singing is now an important part of what I do. I lived for a while in Dublin, and more recently have been living in Co. Galway and Co. Clare, with regular visits to Sligo, playing music and picking up tunes and songs along the way. I love Clare music especially.
I also teach fiddle lessons and have a TTCT diploma to teach the fiddle to advanced level. Having being involved in a few CDs, I recently decided to make one of my own. The recording was done in Kinvara and in Gurteen, with Seamie O'Dowd and Caroline Locke supplying the best of accompaniment, and resulted in the album shown on the upper left.
