Side Tracks - Paddy Fahey Tunes
Paddy Fahey has composed many excellent tunes over many years; some have been recorded on albums by various people, others probably never recorded commercially. The numbers I use for these tunes are those assigned by Maria Holohan in a thesis she did on Paddy's tunes several years ago. They are not in chronological order since the order in which many of them were composed has been long forgotten. Paddy Fahey has never given names to his tunes; hence they are all known simply as Paddy Fahey's. Some of his tunes exist in somewhat different versions, and in some private recordings of his own playing he has played them slightly differently at different times. It may be that these tunes have evolved over time with repeated playing, or it could well be that he introduces substantial spontaneous variations in tunes at times since he is an excellent and imaginative player.
I make no presumption to play these tunes in the way that Paddy himself would play them, particularly since he has a distinctive style which probably results from something of the old East Galway style combined with a large portion of his own originality. My playing is different, particularly in terms of bowing. Also, they are very hard tunes! More on the way. |
